Lighting

Good lighting is crucial for successful cultivation.  Either east or a lightly shaded south exposure is the best for Phalaenopsis. A western exposure may be very hot from late spring through early fall. It could burn the leaves on your Phalaenopsis.

Temperature

Normal household temperatures are sufficient for these orchids. Daytime temperatures should be between 75 to 85 degrees F. Nighttime temperatures should be between 60 and 65 degrees F.

Humidity

Humidity of 50% is preferred. Sufficient humidity is usually found in a bathroom or kitchen.

Watering

Once or twice a week is enough watering for a phalaenopsis potted in bark. These plants may require more watering in the summer months, perhaps every 4-5 days. Remember: the hotter it is, the more water the plant needs: the less heat, then, the less water the plant requires. If they are kept in sphagnum moss, they will not require as much water. Every 7-10 days should be sufficient. Water the orchids early in the day so their foliage will be dry by evening.  Do not let them stand in water. Trays should be placed under the pots so water can drain off.

Potting

Grow either in sphagnum moss or orchid bark mix. Repot every two years, particularly after flowering.

Flowering

Plants may flower twice. Cut the stem under the first flower on the spray after the flower goes out of bloom. Another spray of flowers may appear from the node just below.

Fertilizer

Fertilize regularly, It is recommended that plants be pre-watered before applying the diluted solution, if the bark or moss is dry.

Pests and Bacteria

Scales, mealy bugs and spider mites are common pests. The most efficient method of pest control is an encapsulated pyrethrum time-release insecticide. Use Physan 20 to prevent bacteria & fungal disease.
